Health & Nutrition
1.10.10
Did health & nutrition make your resolution list? Looking for healthy eating plans that won’t slow you down? Are you super busy and want some go-to foods for when you are on the run? Do you turn to healthy eating websites looking for the magic answer?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then this show is for you.
This week on What’s Hot with Molly, Kelly and Caitlin, we had the distinct pleasure of talking with Julie Alessi and Johanna Brandon – two soon-to-be registered dietitians and authors of J&J Interns. They regale us with their healthy eating tips on their website, so we thought it only fitting that we get a piece of them live and on the air.
Similar to exercise resolutions, we all vow that “this year, I am going to take better care of myself” and inevitably some of these good intentions fall by the wayside. Julie and Johanna shared a few secrets that they use in their everyday lives to help them stay on the healthier side:
• Regularly consult the labels! Seriously, just check them out and see how much sodium, saturated fats, carbohydrates your choices have. Getting into the habit of this will surely have a positive influence on your food choices.
• Measure it out! Have you ever really looked at the serving size on the back of your cereal box? And how much do you actually pour for yourself?
• Consider the size of your dishes. Think of the last time you served yourself a helping of pasta. Did you serve it on a big pasta plate? Did you really need that much? Same goes for cereal, dessert…should you use smaller plates/bowl to help with the scale?
• Prepare ahead! Plan for the week. Make a batch of your favorite soups, salads – really anything that falls into the category of “health foods”. Julie and Johanna make tuna salad at the beginning of the week and take it with them. Avoid restaurants as a solution.
• Have grab and go foods ready – listen in to learn what two soon to be dietitians use as their go-to items. We were so excited that Kelly immediately went to the store to stock up.
• What are the ingredients these two just can’t live without – and spice up every dish? Listen in to find out my friend.
Then Caitlin solves a purchase decision dilemma for Molly (Tofu – just what kind to buy) and gives some great insight on how to freshen and brighten up your fruits and veggies. She actually touches upon salt – check out the salt article here for some additional information on the salts Caitlin loves to use.
P.S. There is a brief 20 seconds of technical issues in that Caitlin’s microphone was not on. Stay with us, it gets figured out pretty quickly.
