Mini Hot Browns
kentucky in a bite
These mini hot browns are not only pretty but also quite tasty. We were asked to use Honey Baked Hams at a charity event, but were told to think of something new. These mini hot browns were a hit (with both the guests and my husband). Also try Honey Baked Ham Stuffed Shrimp for a great way to use Honey Baked Hams
These hot browns may take a little more effort than most of my recipes, but they are far from hard to make. Watch this video for an easy way to get the tomato just right.
key information
- Yield: 12
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cooking Time: 20 minutes
ingredients
- 4 Slices White Bread
- 1 Cup HoneyBaked Ham, finely diced
- 1 Tomato, finely diced
- 3 Pieces Bacon
- 1 Cup Cheddar Cheese Sauce
instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cut your white bread into little round using either a 1 1/2 inch round cookie cutter, a wide shot glass or even a baby bottle opening. You should be able to yield 3 circles per slice of bread.
3. Using a mini muffin tin, smush the bread into the mold to create individual bowls. Press against the sides a little to make sure they will stay and there will be room for the stuffing.
4. Finely dice your ham and tomato. You want to make sure that they are tiny because there isn’t much room to put the ham and tomatoes on top of the bread.
5. Cook your honey cayenne bacon. Because there are so few pieces you can cook it in the microwave, one minute per slice of bacon. Once cooked and cooled chop into crumbles.
6. Create your char cheddar cheese sauce.
7. Toast your bread in the mini muffin tins in the 350 degree oven for approximately 4-5 minutes. Don’t go to far because you don’t want to burn the bread.
8. To assemble: place a teaspoon of finely diced ham into the bowl of bread, dollop a teaspoon of the cheese sauce, and top with your diced tomatoes and crispy bacon. I like to assemble the bread while the bowls are still in the muffin tin and then just pop them off with a knife. This way the bread won’t move while you are trying to assemble.
helpful hints
- You can make these oversized as well - they do not need to be minis!
- You do not need to make the bacon a honey cayenne bacon - just my recommend.
- Serve these at a Kentucky Derby Party. You will be a hit!
- I think that HoneyBaked Ham is the best!
