Steak Sandwich Recipe

Steak Sandwich Recipe

Inspired by a salisbury steak dinner, this steak sandwich recipe may just be the best thing happening between two hunks of bread. There’s nothing easier than cooking flank steak, and you know you’ve always got some mashed potatoes in the fridge. Spoon some truffle gravy into the mix, and you’ll take steak sandwiches to a whole new level. (I salivate as I write…)

salisbury steak sliders recipe instruction

  1. Season both sides of the flank steak with salt and pepper.
  2. To a large pan, add a few tablespoons of vegetable oil and turn to high heat. When the oil is running around and the pan is hot, add your flank steak.
  3. Let the steak cook for 5-7 minutes on the first side. (Depends on the thickness, but once you see it is cooked half-way up its side, flip it.)
  4. When the first side has a great crust, flip the steak and cook another 3-4 minutes on high heat.
  5. When the steak is cooked to your likeness, remove from the pan and reduce the heat. Add your truffles to the pan and scrape the brown bits off the bottom of the pan.
  6. Once brown bits are up, add your broth and cream. Bring to a boil and let reduce until the sauce has become thick like gravy.
  7. While the sauce is reducing, prepare your sandwiches. Slice your buns in half width-wise. Smear the bottom of the bun with hot mashed potatoes.
  8. Next, slice your flank steak against the grain, as thinly as you can. Lay 2-3 slices of steak on each bun. Pour any juices left from slicing the steak into the boiling sauce.
  9. When the sauce coats the back of your spoon, generously spoon it over your steak. Top with the second half of the bun and serve while it is still hot.

salisbury steak sliders tips and tricks

  • I designed this recipe around a small container of truffles I brought home from Italy. If you can’t find a small jar of truffles at a specialty store, you can always substitute your favorite mushrooms. Thinly-sliced portabellos, shitakes, or simple white button mushrooms will work.

  • If you want to prepare this steak sandwiches recipe in advance you can always cook the steak and make the gravy a day in advance. I would warm the steak up in a 300-degree oven and just microwave the gravy and mashed potatoes when you are ready to assemble the sandwiches.
  • If your local bakery doesn’t have rye buns, you can always substitute with sliced rye bread.
