Baked Catfish (Homemade Fish Sticks)

Baked Catfish (Homemade Fish Sticks)

There’s just no way you’ll be tapping into a box of frozen fish sticks again once you taste these. Super fresh, and much healthier, my homemade fish sticks are light and crunchy, and downright to-die-for with my Homemade Tartar Sauce. Serve them as a meal with macaroni and cheese and green beans, or as an appetizer, even, as we did in the picture, one at a time in a shot glass of sauce.

baked catfish recipe instruction

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Prepare your fish: Slice each filet into three smaller pieces. Season both sides of the catfish with salt, pepper, and fresh dill.
  3. Create your breading stations: In a small bowl, whisk eggs and a little water into a uniform consistency. Into another bowl empty out your Panko breadcrumbs.
  4. First, dredge your fish in the egg wash, then toss in the breadcrumbs. Place on a baking sheet.
  5. When all of the fish is coated, place the cookie sheet and let cook 10 minutes.
  6. After 10 minutes check on your fish. When the fish is firm and white it is finished cooking. If your fish isn’t there yet I would let it cook another 3-5 minutes and then check again. The timing depends on the thickness of your fish; just keep checking until it’s cooked through.
  7. Once the fish is finished cooking, remove from the oven and let rest a couple minutes. Serve warm with Homemade Tartar Sauce and enjoy!

baked catfish tips and tricks

  • This is a healthy version of fish sticks. Use it with your favorite fish, or whatever fresh fish is available to you.
  • If you’d like to brown the fish sticks, for the last 1-2 minutes of cooking you can turn your oven from bake to broil and let them get a little color that way. Make sure your baking sheet isn’t directly under the flame because you will risk burning them. I like to place them on a lower rack which might take a little longer, but nothing will get burnt.
