Getting Organized: Stay Committed and Save Time

I love a freshly organized cabinet where all of the Tupperware containers have a matching lid, a refrigerator with all of the jars and containers facing in the same direction and easily accessible…

Those two words: “getting organized” make my little heart go pitter patter. I love a freshly organized cabinet where all of the Tupperware containers have a matching lid, a refrigerator with all of the jars and containers facing in the same direction and easily accessible, a purse where I can find my ringing cell phone the instant it rings…a grocery shopping list that is organized by grocery aisle and texted to me while I am at the grocery….a schedule that allows for me the right amount of time to get in a good work out… uumm what?

Call off the dogs. While we can’t solve all of the world’s problems, there are a few on that list above that we can help you to master.

Foodies’ Night In has introduced us to so many wonderful people and one of which, Carol from Cozi.com spends her day tweeting all sorts of fun tips and tricks to help manage your busy life. Naturally I had to check out her site and did I hit the jackpot.  I’m talking color-coded family calendars with appointment reminders that can be sent by text message, drag and drop “To Do” lists, and of course grocery lists that can be texted to the person who actually hits the store…  Simply amazing. If you want to get organized, this site is for you.

Now as for getting in a workout, it’s all about time management. I turned to our friend (and Caitlin’s trainer), Danielle Korb for a little advice. Wouldn’t you know that even she has to practice old school organizing tips to keep even herself in check with a workout schedule.  She too is tempted to meet friends out instead of getting in her workout, “giving herself the night off” after a long day. (Note that these are two things that I am extremely guilty of doing.  Regularly.)

As it turns out, she simply gets organized at the start of the week. Hear it straight from the trainer’s mouth:

Even though I own a gym & am in the gym all day I still sit down each week & make a workout schedule for myself. If I don’t do this I find myself forgetting to bring my workout clothes, getting caught up in tasks, or not making effective use of my time.

Caitlin leads a busy schedule with her career and being a mom. Some days she comes in for her AM workouts after waking up at 4am to start cooking, so glad she had a workout appointment that she already committed to attending. She knows she is tired in the beginning, but always works hard, & is so proud of herself at the end of her workouts. On those days she always reminds me, “Danielle, some days you just get points for showing up.” She is absolutely right, not every workout are you going to be fully rested and ready to go. Planning ahead will help you to get it in & keep you progressing. Caitlin has done a great job of consistently training the last 6 months & has new outfits to show for it.

Time Management

I recommend planning your fitness schedule 1 week in advance. Of course you are going to have times that typically work best so sticking to a set routine is great. That way everything else starts to work around your fitness schedule. At the same time there are always going to be schedule variations.

It is very simple yet very effective: plan, commit…and sometimes you just get points for showing up.
