Springerle Cookies
It is absolutely amazing the amount of work that goes into each and every one of the cookies that Queen City Cookies bakes and sells. Owner Peggy Shannon is a clear lover of her craft and has an unbelievable amount of patience, not to mention good taste.
Springerle Cookies
Before Sunday, and our conversation with Queen City Cookies Owner Peggy Shannon (on What’s Hot radio – 55KRC), we had no idea just how much work it took to make just one Springerle cookie. Of course baking can always have its nuances but in the online video below, you’ll learn firsthand just how much time it takes for one single batch of cookies to be made. We are talking in terms of days here people.
How to Bake Springerle Cookies
For starters, the dough takes an hour to create. Just the dough. And then comes the very intricate cookie molds. Just look at the detail – an incredible amount per mold. And then you have to let the cookies sit out for 24 hours…and then dust them…and bake them… If you are looking to learn how to bake Springerle cookies, the name of the game appears to be slow and at a low temperature to be sure the cookies do not crack – or even explode on you (as we are told can happen).

It is absolutely amazing the amount of work that goes into each and every one of the cookies that Queen City Cookies bakes and sells. Owner Peggy Shannon is a clear lover of her craft and has an unbelievable amount of patience, not to mention good taste. Learning Springerle baking is one thing, but she has taken the business to new heights with her flavorings. Peggy has stepped out of the traditional cookie flavors and has 24 cookie flavors. Wow! We got to try the Dulce de Leche, Almond, Lemon and Vanilla and let us tell you they were quite tasty. Not only is this edible art beautiful, it is delicious.
Holiday Ornaments
Springerle cookies also make for beautiful holiday ornaments. If you just can’t bring yourself to eat the little work of art (much to Peggy’s dismay), paint it. Now that we say it, can’t you remember seeing cookies like this on your parents or grandparents’ homes around the holidays?

Of course we had to ask Peggy how she got into baking such a unique cookie – and then starting a business around it. Her answer: Martha Stewart magazine. Imagine that. She was so inspired by the image on the cover of the magazine a few years ago, she knew right then and there that would be the next step in her amazing journey. For us, it is always inspiring to learn the back story – why and how people are so successful. Often times, we know and love the product, but don’t know the people. It was truly our pleasure to get to hang with Peggy this past Sunday.
